Winthrop University is accepting
applications for the following position: Financial Aid Counselor
Major Duties:
Reporting
to the Assistant Director of Financial Aid, serves as a Financial Aid Counselor.
Provides information and advice on institutional, state and federal
student financial aid programs, as well as information on alternative sources
and methods of financing educational costs to students, prospective students,
and parents through office visits, telephone calls, and emails. Represents the
Office of Financial Aid at campus events and New/Transfer Student Orientation
sessions. Completes weekly reports and resolves issues with student financial
aid awards. Will be required to work occasional overtime during peak processing
periods. Administers SC Teacher and Private Loans. Monitors federal and state
rules, regulations and procedures for loans and serves as liaison between
financial aid staff and lending agencies for loan issues/questions. Coordinates
private loan reconciliation and returns with other university offices. Coordinates efforts to develop,
implement, and maintain a Default Management Plan for student loan borrowers.
Coordinates financial aid awards for students who are enrolled through
transient agreements. Manages SC Vocational Rehabilitation and SC Commission
for the Blind assistance programs and serves as liaison with agency officials to
provide information necessary to assess student eligibility. Evaluates and
adjusts financial aid awards as necessary. Perform default checks for Human
Resources at their request. Performs other related duties as required.
Minimum Training and
Experience:
Bachelor’s degree required. Two
years of work experience in student financial aid highly desired. Work
experience in higher education in financial aid, counseling, statistics, records
management and data processing preferred. Proficiency using MS Word, Excel,
PowerPoint and SCT Banner highly desired.
Knowledge, Skills and
Abilities:
Considerable knowledge of the
policies, procedures and practices for administering financial aid programs.
Considerable knowledge of the federal, state and institutional guidelines for
administering financial aid programs. Ability to be sensitive to the concerns
of economically disadvantaged students and parents and to diffuse difficult
situations/conversations. Ability to work independently as well as
collaboratively to administer complex procedures and regulations. Ability to
establish and maintain effective working relationships with faculty, staff,
students and the general public. Ability to communicate effectively, both
verbally and in writing. Ability to research and resolve complex questions.
Must be detailed-oriented and able to work accurately on a variety of
reports/processes necessary for financial aid processing. Effective
interpersonal, organizational, and analytical skills.
Pay Band
05/Level 01. Starting salary: $31,805 per year (qualifications and funding
will determine actual salary).
