SCASFAA 2013 Conference
Hopefully everyone is settled into a new term and looking
forward to the April conference. Here at
SCC, we’ve just kicked off our 2013/14 processing and are ready for the
incoming documents, phone calls and smiling student faces.
I want to remind everyone of 2013’s conference charity, “Cell
Phones for Soldiers”. It is a non-profit
organization that provides free communication tools to active duty military
members and veterans. It was founded in
April 2004 by Robbie and Brittany Bergquist, then ages 12 and 13. Since 2004, the organization has provided 181
million minutes of prepaid calling cards to deserving recipients. In July 2012, the Berquists launched “Helping
Heroes Home”, a new program within Cell Phones for Soldiers. It provides emergency funds for returning
veterans to alleviate communication challenges as well as physical, emotional
and assimilation hardships. If you haven’t had an opportunity, take a moment and read
more about the Bergquists and the organization at www.cellphonesforsoldiers.com .
More information will be coming soon on our annual silent
auction and raffle. Meanwhile, our office is getting SCC students and employees involved
by collecting cell phones on our campuses.
Gently-used cellular devices from any carrier are preferred to
broken or dated ones. Proceeds are still generated from the recycling of broken
and dated devices. However, the charity
benefits most from recent, functioning phones.
Batteries, chargers and accessories are not required and elimination of
these will save on weight and postage.
Stay tuned, there is more to come!
Thanks,
Sean Collum, 2013 SCASFAA Conference Committee
